Psychiatry is not much of a mainstream subject for undergraduates in India. It is just taught as a small part under Internal Medicine. The time given for clinical postings in a mental health ward is not much either (it was just two weeks for us, only once in the entire course). But you can't deny that it is a very important but often neglected subject from practical point of view. You don't need to be a psychiatrist to know Psychiatry. Knowing how the human mind works (and how things can go wrong with it) is sure to help us in a lot of ways, both as a doctor and as a normal human.
This is a short book for psychiatry recommended by many professors that does a good job of explaining the basics of psychiatry without going into much unnecessary detail. Hence it is perfect for an undergraduate who want to learn a few concepts in psychiatry.
